The rich foundation of St. John's has as its roots a compelling love to serve the needs of persons who are poor and marginalized. Such compassion and love was unheard of in Paris, France during the 1600's.

A poor Parish priest named Vincent dePaul and a widow, Louise de Marillac, opened their hands and hearts to the needs of the poor in Paris. Out of the seeds of their undaunting compassion there arose a community of Vincentian Priests in 1625 and the Daughters of Charity in 1633 founded to give ear and voice to those whom society had forgotten.

Vincent and Louise's example inspired within the company of Vincentians and Daughters of Charity the desire to serve their brothers and sisters who are in need, to see Christ in them, to journey with them through their joys and sorrows and always, always treating them with respect and devotion. To act in such a way truly brings the kingdom of heaven here on earth. The poor are a gift who ignite the fire of love as they courageously seek to overcome the overwhelming circumstances in their lives.

In 1868, the Vincentian Priests and Brothers answered that same call of service and came to Bedford- Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, New York.
It was out of that response that St. John the Baptist Parish was established.

From its very beginning, St. John's tried to meet the needs of the neighborhood community. A grammar school, St. John's Prep High School, St. John's College (which later became St. John's University) and a Seminary were all established on the city block bounded by Lewis and Willoughby Avenues in Brooklyn. Bedford-Stuyvesant is one of the poorest areas in Brooklyn. The Daughters of Charity, who were commissioned to reach out to the poor, the sick and the abandoned- to people in those places who were neglected by the charities of their day, were invited to serve at St. John the Baptist and on September 1, 1971 began their ministries there.
